An area rug is just as important as any other piece of furniture – it has to look good while also being comfortable and practical. But with so many rugs to choose from, choosing the right one for your Jersey City home can be a challenge. To make the process easier, here are some tips from our experts at Floor Coverings International North Jersey:
1. Determine size and room layout
Depending on what your room looks like, your rug will need to be a particular size to fit properly. In a living room, your rug should either be large enough to fit the front legs of each piece of furniture or to fit all the legs of all pieces of furniture. In a dining room, the rug should be large enough that you can pull the chairs away from the table and still have them sitting on it. In a bedroom, the rug should be large enough to extend out from the sides and end of the bed.
2. Consider the needs of your space
In high-traffic areas, like hallways, it’s important to choose a rug with the right material and construction to last. Low-pile rugs in wool, cotton, sisal, jute, and other natural fibers are a good choice for areas with lots of foot traffic – look for a rug that is affordable, durable, and easy to clean. In areas with less activity, like a bedroom, comfort can be prioritized over durability. In this kind of space, a tufted or high-pile rug will be most comfortable on the feet. Look for a frieze rug or another soft, textured style.
3. Choose a design
If you already have furniture for your space, choose a rug that will complement it. For example, if you have a patterned bed or couch, choose a solid-colored or neutral rug that won’t compete. If your furniture is basic, choose a fun printed rug to add visual interest. However, if you are designing your room from scratch, choose an area rug that speaks to you. A neutral rug works as a versatile canvas, perfect for layering with furniture and décor in different patterns, textures, and colors. If you choose a patterned or solid-colored rug, tie the color(s) in with your furniture and accessories.
4. Take care of your rug
It’s important to care for your rug so that it will continue to look and feel good. Place a good quality rug pad underneath to add cushion and prevent the rug from slipping. Use a vacuum to keep it clean, and rotate the rug every so often so that all parts of it get equal wear and sun exposure.
